Sony Xperia 5 announced: A smaller Xperia 1, but what else?

June 18, 2025

TheSony Xperia 1was a rather interesting flagship release for the company earlier this year, butSonyisn’t stopping there though. Now, the firm has announced the Sony Xperia 5, skipping a few numbers in the process.

Sony’s latest flagship smartphone differs from theXperia 1by being a little smaller, offering a 6.1-inch FHD+ OLED HDR screen compared to the Xperia 1’s 6.5-inch 4K OLED screen. The Xperia 5 sticks to the Xperia 1’s 21:9 aspect ratio though.

Sony’s phone retains a triple rear camera setup, following its adoption on the older phone. The company says it’s still a 12MP triple camera layout, offering a normal, wide, and telephoto trio. Much like the earlier flagship, you can expect eye autofocus tech here, as the phone tracks a subject’s eyes in order to keep them in focus.

A smaller phone generally means a smaller battery, and this is indeed the case for the Xperia 5. The battery weighs in at 3,140mAh compared to the Xperia 1’s 3,330mAh — not a massive difference, then.

Sony also confirmed that the Dual Shock 4 controller is now supported on the Xperia 5 and Xperia 1, specifically referencingFortnitewhen talking about the integration.

In a rather interesting touch, the Japanese giant says you can optimize audio for your ears by taking a photo of your ear. The photo is then sent to the cloud for analysis, with optimizations being sent to your phone.

Otherwise, the new phone is powered by a Snapdragon 855 chipset, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of expandable storage. Other noteworthy details include IP68 water/dust resistance, an 8MP selfie camera, and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. Don’t expect a3.5mm porthere though.

The Sony Xperia 5 will be available in Europe from next month, with pre-orders taking place from next week. You can check out the European product listing via the button below.
