Motorola just did the only thing worse than slowly issuing Android updates

June 09, 2025

Typically, you make promises if you intend to follow through on them. Motorola apparentlydidn’t get that memo, since the company announced today onLenovo’s forumssomeMoto Z2 Forcemodels will not getAndroid 9 Pie.

The unlucky models include those sold byT-Mobile,AT&T, andSprint. TheVerizonmodel will get Pie, but only to ensure compatibility with the5G Moto Mod. According to aprevious announcement, the 5G Moto Mod will be compatible with the Moto Z2 Force sometime this summer.

Motorola also said it’s “committed to providing two years ofAndroidsecurity updates on all Moto Z2 Force devices.” That means the phone’s last security update will arrive sometime in July, since it launched in July 2017.

This is disappointing news for Moto Z2 Force owners expecting Pie. With aSnapdragon 835and 4GB of RAM, the phone is more than capable of running the update. Even the original Google Pixel, which features the relatively olderSnapdragon 821and launched in 2016, already runs Pie and will getAndroid Qlater this summer.

Meme about Motorola’s slow update rollout

This is also disappointing news for those considering a higher-end Motorola smartphone. The company already confirmed theMoto Z4willnot get Android R next year. As for theMoto Z3, there’s now a possibility it won’t get Android Q.

It was already bad enough with Motorola slowly issuing Android updates. However, not issuing updates after promising them for a perfectly capable smartphone takes things to a new low.
