July 24, 2025
It was only last year when Google announced its voice assistant was installedon 1 billion total devices. An impressive number for sure, but that number doesn’t mean much if people aren’t actually using it. Now, Google is announcing that theGoogle Assistanthas over 500 million active monthly users.
500 million active monthly users is no small feat, especially considering the Google Assistant wasavailableon 500 million devices in May 2018.

A 2017 pollconcluded that over 65% ofAndroid Authorityreaders used their phone’s voice assistant at least once a week. We can only assume that number has increased in the past two years, as Google Assistant — and voice assistants as a whole — have become even easier to use and more helpful in our daily lives.
This year alone, the Google Assistant gained the ability tocontrol Chromeon the Pixel 4, enabled people toapply for jobs, and gainedTasker-like functionality. It also receiveda major overhaul in Octoberand gained new celebrity voice cameos likeJohn LegendandIssa Rae.
Google is also announcing atCES 2020that the Assistantis gaining useful featureslike speed dial contacts, sticky notes, and helpful privacy features.
The Assistant is available on most Android smartphones,iPhones,Chromebooks, headphones,Wear OS watches, as well as thousands and thousands ofsmart home productsacross a variety of categories. Earlier this year, Google rolled out the Assistant to theuber-popular Waze appandnon-Google Chromebooks, too.
A few months ago, we found that mostAndroid Authorityreadersprimarily use the Google Assistantfor controlling smart home products, asking general questions, and for playing music around the house. The Assistant is one of those products that gives you what you put into it — it excels at providing simple answers and helping with more casual functions, but you can use things likeGoogle Assistant Routinesto perform multiple actions at once as long as you have the time to set it up.
Personally, I couldn’t imagine going a day without using the Google Assistant. Do you use it on your phone or smart speaker? If so, what do you use it for? Let us know in the comments, and stay up to date with our other CES 2020 coverage below.
